What Is Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a facilitated small-group session led by a licensed clinician, where several people working through similar challenges meet together. It combines peer support with evidence-based skills like CBT and DBT, and complements individual therapy rather than replacing it — giving you structure, perspective, and practice in a confidential setting.

Group Therapy Supports a Wide Range of Mental Health Conditions

Our groups serve adults who benefit from peer support and structured skills practice alongside individual care — including process groups, CBT and DBT skills groups, trauma-informed groups, and dual-diagnosis support.

  • Young person in a gray hoodie covering their face with both hands against a concrete wall

    Anxiety Disorder

Approximately 40 million U.S. adults are affected by anxiety disorders (NIMH). Group therapy gives you a place to practice CBT and exposure skills with others who understand, while a licensed clinician guides each session and your individual sessions continue alongside.

  • Young woman with long brown hair and a somber expression standing outdoors by a lake

    Depression

Depression affects an estimated 21 million U.S. adults each year (NIMH). In a CBT/DBT skills group, peer support breaks isolation while you build daily coping tools — structure and connection that weekly solo therapy alone can be slow to provide.

  • Bearded man in a tan sweater leaning on a railing, looking pensively over calm water

    Bipolar Disorder

Nearly 7 million adults in the U.S. live with bipolar disorder (NIMH). Process and skills groups offer interpersonal feedback and routine between psychiatric appointments, helping you recognize patterns with others who share the experience.

  • Hand holding a small amber medication bottle with white cap and brown tablets, with a person in a white coat blurred behind

    Schizophrenia

Approximately 1 in 300 people worldwide live with schizophrenia (WHO). For stable clients, group sessions provide social support, skills training, and a structured, low-pressure setting to practice connection — often as part of a wider treatment plan.

  • A young woman sits on a gray sofa holding a teal pillow during a therapy session as a clinician takes notes on a clipboard

    OCD

About 2.3% of U.S. adults experience OCD at some point in their lives (NIMH). A clinician-led group reinforces the ERP and CBT work that OCD recovery requires, with shared accountability and the perspective of peers doing the same hard work.

  • Close-up of a person's eye tracking two raised fingers, illustrating EMDR eye-movement therapy

    PTSD

About 6% of U.S. adults will have PTSD at some point in their lives (National Center for PTSD, VA). Trauma-informed groups create a safe, confidential space to build grounding and coping skills, complementing trauma-focused individual therapy like CPT and EMDR.

How Group Therapy Works at Victory Bay

Group therapy at Victory Bay is led by a licensed clinician, not run by the members alone. Groups are intentionally small so everyone has room to participate, and each session follows a clear focus — process work, CBT or DBT skills, trauma-informed support, or dual-diagnosis topics. Most clients attend on a regular weekly cadence, and groups run alongside individual sessions and medication management when indicated, so the whole picture of your care stays connected.

Two things make group therapy work for New Jersey adults: confidentiality and consistency. What is shared in the room stays in the room — that ground rule is set on day one and enforced by the facilitator, so members can be honest. And because you see the same faces and the same clinician each week, trust builds quickly. Daytime and evening times mean clients from North Jersey to South Jersey can keep their jobs, their kids' routines, and their relationships intact while they do the work.

New Jersey Group Therapy — Frequently Asked Questions

Does group therapy work as well as individual therapy?

Group therapy and individual therapy do different jobs, and for many people they work best together. Research supports group therapy as an effective format for conditions like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Groups add peer perspective and skills practice that one-on-one work cannot, while individual sessions go deeper on your personal history. Your care team recommends the mix that fits your needs.

Is what I say in group confidential?

Confidentiality is a core ground rule of group therapy. What is shared in the room is expected to stay in the room, and the facilitator sets and enforces that expectation at the first session. Your clinicians are also bound by the same privacy laws that protect individual therapy. We review exactly how confidentiality works before you join a group so you feel safe participating.

How big are the groups?

Our groups are intentionally small so every member has room to participate and the clinician can give real attention to each person. Group sizes vary by type — process groups and skills groups are kept compact rather than large lecture-style sessions. Our admissions team can tell you the typical size of the specific group that fits your situation when you call.

What kinds of groups does Victory Bay offer?

Victory Bay offers several types of group therapy, including process groups, CBT and DBT skills groups, trauma-informed groups, and dual-diagnosis support for clients managing both mental health and substance use concerns. Each group is led by a licensed clinician and has a clear focus. At intake, your care team matches you to the groups that best support your goals.

Do I have to talk in group therapy?

No one is forced to share before they are ready. Many people start by mostly listening, and the facilitator helps you participate at a pace that feels safe. Over time, most members find that speaking up — and hearing from others working through similar challenges — becomes one of the most valuable parts of group therapy. There is no pressure to perform.

Can group therapy be done by telehealth in New Jersey?

Yes. In addition to in-person groups at our Laurel Springs location, Victory Bay offers telehealth so New Jersey adults can join group sessions securely from home. Virtual groups follow the same confidentiality rules and clinician facilitation as in-person sessions. Our admissions team can explain which format fits your situation and how virtual groups are structured.

Which insurance plans does Victory Bay accept?

Victory Bay accepts Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, and Aetna. We do not accept Medicare or Medicaid at this time. Because coverage varies by plan, our admissions team verifies your specific benefits before you start so you understand any out-of-pocket costs in advance. Call us and we will check your coverage quickly.
